Abstract
In this box there are forty-six letters, three with envelopes, one note and two poems, apparently sent separately rather than included in letters. The first dated item is a poem, by Gallet for Chabot, Jan. 12, 1962. The letter following that, June 13, 1962, tells of marital problems but ends anticipating a trip with Chabot and O'Keeffe to Hopi country. Following this letter is a photocopy of a letter from Gallet to O'Keeffe, Aug. 22, 1962, expressing her pleasure in meeting O'Keeffe at Ghost Ranch and photographing her there. The original of this letter is in the Beinecke Library at Yale. The current whereabouts of these photographs is unknown. On Sept. 1, 1962 Gallet sends Chabot her translation of a German poem, apparently without a letter. Many of the letters thereafter contain translated and un-translated German poems. The verso of the letter, Dec. 27, 1963, has a pencil note by Chabot, dated Jan. 27, 1963. In the letter, July 31, 1964, Gallet speaks of her desire to photograph some paintings by O'Keeffe. In Chabot's letter to Roger Gallet, April 17, 1979, she refers to these photographs of O'Keeffe paintings by Gallet. The whereabouts of these photographs are now unknown. In the letters, Sept. 14, 1964 and Oct. 6, 1964, Gallet comments on Irene Zelinski's suicide attempt. The letters from Gallet to Chabot reflect her feelings for Chabot, the problems and pleasures of her family life and comment on her past in Germany, which fascinated Chabot.
