DESCRIPTION
- Abstract
- MABEL STEWART LUDLUM [aka "Sister Mabel"; Mrs. Seymour Dewitt Ludlum] Correspondence from Dorothy Stewart to Mabel Ludlum: 1. Seventeen letters and one postcard, Feb. 18, 1933 - July 9, 1935, written from various cities and towns in Mexico, except the letters of May 9, 1933 written from New York, and the letter of Oct. 24, 1934, written from Ghost Ranch in Abiquiu, NM, where D.N.S. is on a painting trip with Theodora Goddard. The letter of June 9, 1933 has D.N.S.'s first mention of "the Texas girl", Maria Chabot, to Ludlum and is written on the back of a torn proof sheet from Stewart's book Hornacinas. The letter of July 31, 1933 gives longer description of D.N.S.'s reaction to Chabot, and the relationship of Rohrer and Hulme. Two letters found together in one envelope, posted May 15, 1935 [but otherwise undated], discuss M.C.'s eye operation in Mexico by a German doctor. Both letters are written from Tacubaya, a suburb of Mexico, D.F. 2. Twelve letters and six postcards, Nov. 11, 1936 - Nov. 1, 1938. The letter of Nov. 11, 1936 is written from Mexico, D.F., and that of Feb. 10, 1937 is written from Santa Fe. The correspondence from July 7, 1937 to Nov. 1, 1938 is written from various cities, when she was traveling with M.C. on their European trip. The postcard of June 26, 1938 is illustrated. The correspondence of June 4, 1938 - Aug. 8, 1938 concerns Oxford and studies she and M.C. pursued there.
